OvertimeCalculator.uk provides general information and free calculators about overtime pay, overtime rates, tax and related topics for a UK audience. Please read this disclaimer carefully before relying on anything you read or calculate on this site.
General information, not advice
Nothing on this website constitutes legal, tax, financial, accounting or employment advice. Our content is written to help you understand how overtime pay generally works in the UK, but every workplace, contract and personal tax position is different. You should not act, or refrain from acting, based solely on information from this site without checking your own contract or seeking advice from a suitably qualified professional or organisation such as Acas.
Calculator accuracy
Our calculators use standard, publicly known formulas (for example, hourly rate × multiplier × overtime hours, and annual salary ÷ 52 ÷ weekly hours). They are designed to give a helpful estimate, not an exact payslip figure. Actual pay may differ due to specific contractual terms, pension contributions, salary sacrifice arrangements, student loan deductions, tax code adjustments, or other factors our calculators do not account for.
No fixed legal overtime rate
We want to be particularly clear on this point: UK law does not set a fixed overtime rate. There is no automatic legal right to time and a half, double time, or any other multiplier for overtime. Whether, and how much, extra you are paid for overtime depends on your employment contract or workplace agreement. Multiplier options in our calculators (such as 1.25×, 1.5× and 2×) are provided because they are common in UK workplaces, not because they are legally guaranteed.
Tax estimates
Our overtime tax calculator gives a simplified, indicative estimate of Income Tax and National Insurance on overtime pay using standard rates and bands. It does not account for every individual circumstance (such as a non-standard tax code, marriage allowance, student loan repayments, or pension salary sacrifice), and should not be relied upon as an exact HMRC calculation.
