Salary to Hourly Calculator
Convert your annual salary into an hourly rate. This is the same conversion used by our main overtime calculator when you choose "Annual salary" — useful on its own if you just need your hourly, daily, weekly or monthly rate.
How to convert a salary into an hourly rate
The standard way to convert an annual salary into an hourly rate is: annual salary ÷ weeks worked per year ÷ normal weekly hours. For most full-time employees working all year round, that means dividing by 52 weeks. For example, a £30,000 salary with a 37.5-hour working week gives an hourly rate of £30,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 37.5 = £15.38 per hour.
This calculation matters for several reasons beyond simple curiosity. It lets you compare a salaried job offer with an hourly-paid one on a like-for-like basis, it is the starting point for working out overtime pay when you are salaried (see our main overtime calculator), and it is relevant for checking that your pay does not fall below the National Minimum Wage once actual hours worked are taken into account.
Why "weeks worked per year" matters
Most full-time employees are paid across all 52 weeks of the year, including paid annual leave, so dividing by 52 is correct for them. However, some roles — particularly term-time-only school and college support staff, or contracts with extended unpaid leave built in — are genuinely only paid for a portion of the year, even though the annual salary figure quoted may already average this out (a "term-time only" salary is often already annualised across 52 weeks for payment purposes, so check your contract carefully before changing this figure). Adjust the "weeks worked per year" field only if you are certain your salary figure is not already spread evenly across the full year.
Daily and monthly figures
Your daily rate is calculated by dividing your weekly pay by your normal working days per week (5 days for a typical Monday-to-Friday role). Your monthly figure divides the annual salary evenly by 12, which is the standard method used for salaried monthly pay, even though calendar months contain different numbers of working days.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?
Divide your annual salary by the number of weeks you are paid for (usually 52), then divide the result by your normal weekly hours. For example, £26,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 35 hours = £14.29 per hour.
Does this include overtime pay?
No, this calculator only converts your base salary into an hourly figure. To work out overtime pay on top of that hourly rate, use our main overtime calculator.
Is this the same as my take-home hourly rate?
No, this is a gross hourly rate before Income Tax, National Insurance and any other deductions. For a rough estimate of deductions, see our overtime tax calculator.
